The class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays September 19 - December 19, 2018 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm EST.
Course Description
This is a non-credit, introductory course for students in American Sign Language covering basic vocabulary, structure, syntax, and grammar. Conversational skills will be emphasized from an expressive and receptive perspective, as well as the manual alphabet, numbers, colors and facial grammar. Exposure to Deaf Culture and culturally appropriate behaviors will be included in the course. Cultural topics are included in the study of grammar and structure.

Learning Outcomes and Skills
At the end of this course, students will have:
- Acquired a basic vocabulary in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Demonstrated an understanding of Deaf culture and the Deaf community, culturally appropriate behaviors, and the history of American Sign Language, including the differences in syntax and grammar

About the Instructor
Keith Grant, Jr. was born and raised in Whitesboro, New York and graduated from the New York State School for the Deaf in 2010. He earned an associates degree from Mohawk Valley Community College in interpreting education and a bachelors degree in Deaf Studies from Gallaudet University with a minor in Linguistics. He also received a Masters in Sign Language Education from Galluadet in summer 2018. Keith’s purpose and passion lies in linguistics and he plans to pursue a PhD in Linguistics and conduct research on American Sign Language. He looks forward to a teaching career where he can make a positive impact on young people on a daily basis.
